In this basement we were going for the industrial look. All the exposed piping/water heater, and hvac unit we painted black and left exposed. Textured the ceilings for some character. Painted the cinder block walls. Put all the electric in metal conduit and left exposed. All the woodwork throughout the basement was custom made and finished by us. Added a laundry sink beside the washer and dryer.
